Research profile

The research activity of the department is focused on the four main areas:

QoS and routing aspects in the Internet and telecommunication networks

Most of the topics covered by this research area are strongly related to IP QoS assurances, routing protocols and router performance with emphasis on: traffic and congestion control on IP networks (QoS mechanisms and architectures), QoS in IPv6, inter-domain QoS, BGP, routing strategies for IP networks, router architectures, router performance evaluation and performance modeling (Cisco, Linux, BSD), multicast over IPv4/v6 - transition mechanisms, quality of service management.

Major recent results comprise: - development of router performance measurement methodology, - STSM (Short Term Scientific Mission) COST 263, Technical University of Catalunya (UPC) Barcelona, testing current IPv6 multicast implementations and identifing most suitable transitions mechanisms for provisioning of the multicasting service in a mixed IPv4/IPv6 scenario in modern WAN networks - analysis and development of IPv4/v6 packet processing profiling,

Image and signal processing

Our major scientific interest is in implementing various image processing techniques in human identification systems. We mainly focus on fingerprint and face recognition methods. Most recent research activities concern novel physiological biometrics methods, which would allow passive identification. Such methods could be used in remote access or surveillance systems.

Distance learning

Our main scientific interests in distance learning are: ontologies in distance learning, CAA (Computer Assisted Assessment), cognitive and knowledge-based system (C-KBS), web services in distance learning. The main question on which we try to answer is: how to check students higher order thinking skills using distance learning exams?.
Within C-KBS framework: knowledge acquisition and representation, approximate reasoning and management of uncertainty in C-KBS, fuzzy set approach, neural networks, image processing, classification.

Major recent results:

We have complete LMS (Learning Management System) with many collaboration tools (chat, calendar, news-group etc) and authoring tool. Our students regularly from 2000 take part in learning and exams in our system. In our LMS we implement IMS specifications (CP, QTI, Meta-data etc.).
